How to Identify Genuine Burma Teak (and Avoid Fakes)
A practical, expert guide to identifying real Burma teak by colour, grain, smell, weight and oil content — from India's Burma teak pioneers since 1938.
Genuine Burma teak is identified by five signs: a golden-brown colour that deepens with age, tight straight grain, a leather-like smell when cut, a slightly oily feel, and substantial weight. Below, our team — who introduced Burma teak to India in 1985 — explains each, so you can buy with confidence.
What is Burma teak?
Burma teak is the trade name for Tectona grandis grown in the natural forests of Myanmar. Slow growth produces tighter grain and far higher natural oil and silica content than fast-grown plantation teak, giving its legendary stability and weather resistance.
The 5 signs of genuine Burma teak
- Colour — A warm golden-to-medium brown that darkens attractively with age, rather than greying patchily.
- Grain — Predominantly straight and tight, with a coarse but even texture.
- Smell — A distinctive leather-like scent when freshly cut or sanded.
- Feel — A slightly oily or waxy surface from the wood's natural oils.
- Weight — Dense and substantial in the hand (≈655 kg/m³ dried).

Why it matters for your project
For marine work, exterior doors and heirloom furniture, the higher oil content of Burma teak is what delivers decades of low-maintenance performance. For more details and current grades, see our Burma teak species page or compare it with African teak.
Sourcing tip: buy from an established supplier with documented imports. Laxmi Lumber has imported genuine Burma teak since 1985.
FAQ
Is plantation teak the same as Burma teak?
No. Plantation teak is fast-grown and has wider grain spacing, lower oil content and a paler, less uniform colour than slow-grown Burma teak (Tectona grandis), which has tight grain, high natural oils and a rich golden hue.
Does real teak smell like leather?
Yes — freshly cut genuine teak has a distinctive leather-like or faintly oily scent. A lack of any smell can be a warning sign of a substitute or heavily aged stock.
